Flight Safety Specialist
British Airline Pilots’ Association
Full- time permanent, salary up to £50K p.a.
Based at BALPA’s Head Office at London Heathrow

The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) represents the majority of UK commercial pilots. The BALPA Department of Flight Safety has the sole objective of enhancing aviation safety. The plain value of this objective and the combination of thought, courage and commitment that the post holders will be able to exercise to achieve this objective, make this a rewarding post.
The Department works alongside a Sub-Committee of BALPA’s National Executive Council that is chaired by Captain Rich Pullen. The Department is  managed by the Head of Flight Safety, Dr Rob Hunter. Alongside the Head and the 2 Flight Safety Specialists the Department is staffed with 2 Scheduling Specialists and a PA. Several specialist technical groups comprised of BALPA members are co-ordinated by the Department through its Flight Safety Specialists. The BALPA Safety Plan describes the strategy and safety objectives for the Department for the forthcoming 18 months. The principal work areas described within the Plan are around actual pilot error, “apparent” pilot error, commercial pressure, inadequate regulation, hazards associated with innovation and future developments and unexpected hazards that may be best responded to tactically.

The essential person requirements are to have or have held the qualification of a commercial airline pilot or have similar operational qualifications such as air traffic control, flight or ground engineering, or have substantial regulatory experience in safety analysis and planning
