Flight Test Engineer Tutor
Boscombe Down, Salisbury

QinetiQ is the UK’s largest research and technology organisation. Our customers span the worlds of defence, aerospace, security and many other markets. The problems we help them solve define the modern age.

The Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) at Boscombe Down, near Salisbury, was the first of its kind in the world. Today, operated by QinetiQ on behalf of the MoD, it remains the cornerstone of UK flight test training, as well as providing graduates for many other countries and the wider international defence sector.

You will play a key part in this strong team environment, delivering world class flight test engineering training to students on the ETPS graduate and short courses.

Instructing, supervising, guiding and assessing flight test engineer students throughout their courses, you will be expected to draft end of term and end of course reports, assist in the development of courses and simulation facilities, and act as an end-user expert on flight test instrumentation matters.

Arranging and delivering lectures and tutorials on flight test engineering subjects to both test pilot and flight test engineer students, you will advise and assist in the preparation and conduct of test flying exercises, as well as delivering and grading a range of in-flight instructional sorties. At all times, you will be contributing to the continuing high standards of aviation safety inherent in ETPS flying operations.

Since you will be teaching all aspects of flight test theory and practical techniques to experienced multi-national aircrew and engineers, you must be able to clarify inherently complex subject matter in a confident manner, so that students of all nationalities can understand and then apply the associated principles. Comfortable solving problems by applying independent thinking, you should also have the flexibility to travel both in the UK and overseas to participate in course activities.

With an engineering or science degree – ideally a Chartered Engineer – you should have solid experience actively contributing to a range of significant flight test programmes. You must also be medically fit to gain an unrestricted UK MoD aircrew medical category.

Previous teaching/instructional experience or qualifications will of course be preferred and it would be advantageous to have graduated from ETPS or one of the other MoD-recognised Test Pilot Schools (USNTPS, USAFTPS or EPNER). It will also be beneficial to have experience in one or more of the following areas: fast jet and heavy aircraft test and evaluation; integrated avionics evaluation; weapons carriage, jettison and release testing; using simulation in flight test programmes; and the UK MoD’s Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT).
